Chapter Eight
Wayne and Jack were busy studying the map they had made with the names and locations of every woman or girl they felt might be a target, when a visitor arrived. Rowdy Clay came into the office, his face showing a confident smirk.
'I've found the Prowler! The man you're looking for!' he announced.
'Speak up, son,' Wayne encouraged him. 'Tell us the who and why you think he's the Prowler?'
Rowdy explained to them how he had been keeping a watch over Mrs Kellerman whenever she was out and about. He added that he had been doing some snooping of his own.
'That's when I seen it!' he said, his eyes glowing with his excitement. 'Me and the boys played cards til the wee hours last night and I was heading over to the bunkhouse. It was 'bout an hour before daylight. That's when I noticed a rider cross the street near the back of Flynn's tavern. I slipped over for a look-see. It was Sully Flynn acting like a fox outside a hen house. '
'The man often goes out at all hours,' the sheriff said. 'He has animal traps to check and might have been hunting ten miles out of town until dark. There's any number of reasons for him to be coming home at any hour.'
'Yeah, but what caught my eye was him taking something out of his saddlebags. Next thing, he's looking all around real cautious like.'
'So what'd he do?' Jack asked.
'The thing in his hand looked about the size of one of the feedbags you hook over a horses head â you know, it you want him to get just the amount of grain or oats you intended.'
'Yes,' yes,' Wayne was growing impatient. 'We know what a feedbag is, Rowdy.'
The man put on a deliberate expression. 'Well, sir, he took it into the barn by itself. Then the guy returns a minute later to remove the saddle and puts his horse away.'
The sheriff remained curious. 'What is your point?'
'Don't 'cha see?' Rowdy said. 'Sully removes something special from his saddlebags; he goes into the barn and sticks it somewhere; then he puts away the horse and tack. What was so important that he would stow it before he unsaddled his horse?'
'So,' Jack surmised, 'you think this might be the same kind of bag that's been used to cover the heads of the Prowler victims!'
Rowdy bobbed his head. 'Look, I'm not saying Sully is the killer, but Taw is offering a thousand dollars reward for the man who identifies him. I don't want to miss out on this maybe being the man you're looking for. I mean, I could live like a king for a year or two on a thousands bucks!'
Wayne got up from behind the desk. 'We'll go check it out, Rowdy. You stay out of it. No need causing bad feelings or starting a fight if this turns out to be nothing.'
'I'll wait right here.'
The sheriff took down the shotgun he kept handy on the wall behind him.
